Kwethluk students have been lucky enough to participate in the Rose Urban Rural Sister School Exchange funded by the Alaska Humanities Forum. In the past students in high school have participated, however; the current focus is on middle-school exchanges. The forum provides a curriculum for teachers to use to prepare students for travel. Five student ambassadors and the lead teacher get to travel to an urban center and learn about the various cultural aspects of that city. In addition to traveling to an urban center, Kwethluk also gets the chance to host our five sister school student ambassadors. This is always an exciting week because students get to teach about their own culture. Students often feel a great deal of pride and self-worth after hosting.Kwethluk community dances for the the Wrangell visitors.

The purpose of the program is to bridge the gap between rural and urban centers by providing an educational learning experience that focuses on respect. The three main responsibilities of each student ambassador are:

  • Represent yourself, your community, your culture, and your heritage in a way that is positive and helps others to understand.
  • To participate, experience, and learn about other people, their community, their culture, and their heritage in a way that does not pass judgement.
  • To build connections between yourself and others in order to increase the network of understanding among all Alaskans.
