Students in our school have the opportunity to take many different field trips. Most trips focus on activities in the village or in near by Bethel. However, there are a few large trips that students can take that are life changing.
6th Grade Trip: In the past there has been a 6th grade trip. The 6th graders have gone to New York, Chicago, Anchorage, and San Diego. Like other trips, the 6th grade field trip depends a lot on the students involved, the parents, and the teacher and their ability to fundraise. The trip offers students a chance to see the larger world outside of Kwethluk for the first time. It is truly awesome for all involved.
The high school Close Up Washington D.C. trip is another opportunity students have. We have been on a rotating schedule as it takes a lot of money to travel despite getting scholarships for our students to go. When in D.C. students get a chance to meet with other students from across the country and discuss the governmental process. They problem solve and build connections. At the end of the week students get to meet with their state representatives. The conversations students have with these powerful people are priceless.
One of the recently new trips is the E.F. Smithsonian Grand Canyon science trip. Students will fly down to the Grand Canyon to explore. They will learn about and see natural geological process and how they effect the Earth over time. The trip lasts about 7 days. Students will learn about the rock cycle, fossilization, and erosion. The next science trip could be to another location, either way it will truly be life changing for our students. Students have to work incredibly hard and be very creative to earn the money for the trip, but it will totally be worth it.
